Bike Racks That Look Good and Do Good Coming Soon

Leadership Hermosa plans to install artisan bike racks throughout the city in June.

Editor's Note*: An earlier version of this article had written that the Leadership Hermosa class of 2010 proposed the artisan bike rack project. It is actually the Leadership Hermosa class of 2011. We apologize for the mistake.

Cyclists in Hermosa Beach will be able to park their bikes at colorful pieces of public art this summer, thanks to Leadership Hermosa.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the class of 2011's* proposal to install artisan bike racks in Hermosa’s heavy traffic areas, such as Noble Park, Clark Field, the Strand, Valley Park, the Community Center and Aviation Boulevard.

“Maybe we need a couple here in City Hall,” Mayor Peter Tucker joked at the council meeting.

The bike rack project was proposed to promote eco-friendly transportation, support the city’s carbon neutral goals, encourage exercise, reduce bicycle theft, and alleviate local parking problems, according to Leadership Hermosa’s website.

“Bike racks are greatly needed in this community,” Tucker said. “I want to thank Leadership.”

Leadership Hermosa class members plan to present a project report to the council in February when they will select local artists to design the bike racks and decide how many will be installed.

The class will also raise funds to pay for the bike racks, and expects to finish installing them in June.

Thanks for the great article Jacqueline! Just a point of clarification - this project is being undertaken by the Leadership Hermosa Beach Class of 2011 (not 2010), which is graduating this June. Also, be on the lookout for information about the Class' fundraising event at the Comedy and Magic Club on Wed, March 2nd!

Now can you pass the idea along to Del Amo Shopping Center? I was over there yesterday and couldn't find a bike rack after riding around the entire complex.

Every merchant in town should sponsor a bike rack in front of their store or restaurant or put in their own. Making businesses bike friendly is good for the bottom line. Studies show that the more bikers on a business street the more money is spent in each store. People riding bikes generally move slow enough to see what's in the shops and can easily stop and park if there's a handy bike rack.
In the bike friendly Long Beach Belmont Shore shopping district on 2nd Street they added bright green sharrow lanes and tons of bike racks and saw their per store spending averages go up as a result. People on bikes stop and shop and it's smart business to welcome and accommodate them.

What a great idea! There is a rack just north of Goodstuff HB, but that one is full quite often. I don't know of any others in the Pier Plaza area. And, there are only so many parking meters and stop signs to hook up to.
P.S. Excellent photo of the red bike! (see above).

Grew up in the 'Golden Era' of Hermosa Beach in the mid-sixties. I was a Double Deuce (22nd St.) teen with one of Bill Lyman's first boards (#27, redwood stringers, ughh!). Had an infamous tussle with Dewey Webber over ownership of a certain wave (I won!). Anyway, the old guy digresses ... these stands are a great idea and will only enhance an already beautiful city that I love. [ One humble observation though; I have some legal background and worry that the 'palm tree' stand in the photo might pose some litigious issues in the future because of it's 'pointy' nature, especially at what appears to be eye-level. Just sayin' ... I would hate for anyone to be injured or for the city to be held liable. - Jay Williams
