Celebrating Bob Marley's Birthday
One Drop Redemption is set to perform at Hermosa Beach's Saint Rocke in a tribute show.
People get ready; Monday marks Bob Marley’s birthday and celebrations are set to kick off at 8 p.m. at Saint Rocke with a tribute show by One Drop Redemption, according to the venue’s website.
Singer-songwriter Ras Jahmark Tafari leads the group that performs classic Marley tunes.
In a tribute to Marley of our own, here is a look at the 10 best Bob Marley songs as rated by AOL Radio listeners a couple of years ago (and, yes, we think they’re still the best):
- "One Love/People Get Ready" - This record is actually a hybrid of The Wailers' "One Love" ska rendition on their 1965 album, The Wailing Wailers, and The Impressions' song "People Get Ready," written by Curtis Mayfield, according to AOL Radio.
- "Buffalo Soldier" - America's buffalo soldiers, the inspiration behind this song, were black cavalry regiments created around 1866—it was not until after the Civil War that African-Americans could enlist in the regular army, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior.
- "Is This Love" - Supermodel Naomi Campbell reportedly appeared in this music video as a child in 1978.
- "No Woman, No Cry" - A classic.
- "Jamming" - This single also was on the Exodus album, which was recorded mostly in London while Marley was recovering from an assassination attempt, according to AOL Radio.
- "Three Little Birds" - This single was No. 17 on the UK's Top 20 in 1980, according to AOL Radio.
- "Could You be Loved" - This song was written on an airplane, according to AOL Radio.
- "Stir it up" - The popular version of this song is on the Catch a Fire album. Its original album cover included a sleeve that functioned as a Zippo lighter case, and only 20,000 copies of this cover were made, according to AOL radio.
- "Waiting in Vain" - This Marley song was later covered as a single by Annie Lennox.
- "Get Up, Stand Up" - Rumor has it, this was the last song Marley performed on stage.
