Football Is Not Just a Fantasy In Hermosa

The local social scene changes once football season is in full effect, quickly turning the games into business for fantasy football players.

Hermosa is a melting pot of football fans who root for a plethora of different college and NFL teams, as well as form their own fantasy football leagues.

Venues in the area happily accommodate football devotees on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, making the end of the weekend and the beginning of week some of the busiest days on the Pier.

With USC coverage at Blue 32 every Saturday, champagne brunches at Cafe Boogaloo during NFL Sundays, and football-related prize giveaways at Patrick Molloy's on Mondays, there's plenty to do in Hermosa during football season.

Lydia Siriprakorn, a Manhattan Beach resident and frequent visitor to Hermosa, said that she prefers going to the popular North End Bar and Grill to watch her Philadelphia Eagles or Baltimore Ravens.

"I schedule my Sundays and Monday nights around football now," she said. "When I work, I try to change my schedule to have Sundays off."

Many locals, similar to Siriprakorn, not only watch football at local bars and restaurants for the social aspect, but also to keep up with their fantasy football teams — the game allows players to make up a team of professional football players and bases their standings on how the actual players perform.

If you're at a Hermosa venue during an NFL game, the people around the bars glued to their Blackberries and iPhones are probably checking how their fantasy scores have changed as the game goes on. Though Siriprakorn doesn't have a fantasy team this year, she said that she will definitely have one next year.

"You're the odd one out [around here] when you don't play fantasy football," she said.

In fact, about 30 million people in the U.S. and Canada annually participate in fantasy sports, such as fantasy football, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association.

Unlike other football fans, NFL fantasy sports players approach the games like a business, according to consumer research conducted a couple of years ago by University of Mississippi professor Kim Beason.

The research found that, differing from other football enthusiasts, less than one out of four fantasy football players drink beer during a game. And more than 90 percent are online checking their team's success during the games.

David Tu, a South Bay resident, fantasy football player, and Raiders fan, said that he prefers to watch Sunday football on his TV, laptop and iPad to make sure he catches all the games.

"I have my laptop on the coffee table with my stat tracker on. My iPad is on the coffee table next to my laptop on any game. I need to make sure all my players are doing the work," he said.

"I continue to watch the games while I drink alcoholic beverages and talk trash to my buddies that are over hanging out," he added. "We talk about football and how each of our teams are better than the others."

Dan Goodwin, also a South Bay local, said he often frequents the Hermosa Beach area during football season, and completely changes his weekend routines to catch up with the games.

"I'm watching football all day Sundays now, and constantly checking my teams throughout the day," Goodwin said. "I only watch the games I have [fantasy] players in since those are of most interest."

Goodwin plans to watch the Chiefs and Browns game at Patrick Molloy's this Sunday.

Coming up next weekend — where in Hermosa you can always catch your favorite team playing, and party with fellow football fans.
