A final round of king tides are predicted to hit Southern California on Monday, according to the Santa Monica Baykeeper organization.
The group announced this week that residents are encouraged to photograph the high tides and submit them to the California King Tides Initiative, which is a project with the California Coastkeeper Alliance.
The initiative, which launched two years ago, aims to archive changes in California’s shoreline communities and ecosystems.
King tides occur when the ocean’s highest water level reaches above a high tide on an average day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (see accompanying fact sheet under photo.)
"King tides are a normal occurrence once or twice every year in coastal areas," according to the EPA.
The Santa Monica Baykeeper recommended viewing local king tides in Malibu, Marina del Rey, Port of Long Beach, or Port of Los Angeles.
