Landmark Hermosa: The Pier

If you guessed the Hermosa Beach Pier for this morning's trivia, you were right.

Hermosa Beach has seen three different Piers in its history.

The first Hermosa Beach Pier, which was 500 feet long and made of wood, was built in 1904, according to the Hermosa Beach Historical Society.

A violent storm later destroyed the structure and a second Pier was built in 1914—this time constructed out 1,000-foot concrete with small tiled pavilions along the sides, according to an archived Daily Breeze article.

Storms destroyed the Pier again in the 1940s, according to the Breeze's South Bay History. It was shut down in 1944, opened briefly in 1951, and closed again.

The Pier was later demolished. A new structure was built and dedicated June 5, 1965. Now the Pier includes the Surfers Walk of Fame, and ongoing repairs have been made to upkeep the structure.

"We're experiencing how aged the pier has become," Ken Reamey of the Hermosa Beach Public Works Department told Patch last year. "It's difficult maintaining structures that are part of a marine environment with the saltwater and waves that can corrode the foundation."

Congratulations to Christina Porter and Patrick Kovac for correctly guessing today's Landmark Hermosa. We'll have a new trivia next week.
