Landmark Hermosa: Union Cattle Company

If you guessed the Union Cattle Company for this morning's trivia, you were right.

The Union Cattle Company on Manhattan Avenue in Hermosa Beach has served as a popular Wild West-inspired steakhouse and brewery since 2002.

But years before the restaurant opened, the location housed a more tame venue: the Community Baptist Church of Hermosa Beach.

The church had been a part of the community since 1911, and moved to Manhattan Avenue in 1917, according to a South Bay history report in the Daily Breeze.

The church reportedly raised $40,000 to construct its building, which was later named the First Baptist Church in the 1950s.

The property was reportedly sold in the 1970s, and became the Creative Craft Center, where local craftsmen and women would create and sell goods.

When the center closed a few years following and became vacant, punk-rock bands would rehearse in the empty space, calling the building "the Church."

The Black Flag were among bands and artists who took over the building, according to accounts in the book American Hardcore: A Tribal History, in which Dez Cadena said, "The last show at The Church, we decided to have some fun... We did the show right on the altar, as a stage; we got like 500 people to show up."

In the late 1990s, the restaurant Ein Stein's opened in the downtown property before closing in 2002, according to the Easy Reader.

That's when was born "from the love of rock 'n roll and the American tradition," according to its website.
