Patch Columnist Selected for SEED Award

Joe Galliani is the winner for the South Bay Business Environmental Coalition's 2011 SEED Education and Outreach Award.

In the upcoming 2011 SEED Awards, Hermosa Beach Patch columnist Joe Galliani will be honored as the education and outreach category winner, event organizers told Patch on Thursday.

Since Patch first sprouted in the Beach Cities last year, Galliani has written about local environmental issues in his opinion column, .

Galliani also is organizer of the South Bay 350 Climate Action Group and serves on the board of directors for the South Bay Bicycle Coalition.

"Joe is doing so many things for one person and doing them successfully," said Doug Krauss, chairman of the 2011 SEED event.

The nonprofit South Bay Business Environmental Coalition's SEED Awards honor South Bay residents, groups and businesses that have "exhibited excellence in helping to improve environmental sustainability and quality of life" in local communities, according to its website.

Awards are given to nominees who have exhibited environmental leadership or practiced pollution prevention, education and outreach, resource preservation and innovation.

"It’s open to anybody and that’s exactly the purpose of it, to recognize people who are doing good and show that to other businesses and people," Krauss said.

Here is a list of the 2011 SEED Award winners and honorees:

Environmental Leadership 

Winner: SLJI (Inglewood)
Honorees: AES (Redondo Beach), DHL (Redondo), Kellog (Carson), Watson Land (Carson)

Pollution Prevention

Winner: Green Forest Car Wash (Hawthorne)
Honorees: Raytheon (Manhattan Beach)

Education and Outreach

Winner: Joe Galliani (Redondo Beach)
Honorees: Pike Properties (Redondo Beach), Northrop Grumman (multiple), Transition (Culver City)

Resource Preservation

Winner: SLOLA (Culver City)
Honorees: 9to5 (Hawthorne), Matisse Restaurant (Hawthorne), GWS (South Gate), Topsondown (Culver City), WRS (Redondo Beach), Zislis Group (Manhattan Beach)

Innovation

Winner: Go Green (Manhattan Beach)
Honorees: BREEN (Torrance), LAWA (Los Angeles), ReSail (Redondo Beach)

An award ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Ayres Hotel in Hawthorne.
