Beach Cities residents run the pink treadmill to raise money and awareness for The Wellness Community, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support for people with cancer and their loved ones.

Body One Fitness on Herondo Street kicked off its first breast cancer awareness charity event dubbed "The Pink 100" Tuesday, and the running will continue Saturday. Participants are being asked to donate $100 for an hour on a pink CYBEX treadmill that runs continuously for 100 hours.

Within those hours, organizers hope to raise $10,000 for The Wellness Community, a local nonprofit group dedicated to providing support for people with cancer and their families.

"We've gotten people to come out and do the wee hours of the morning, even," said Theresa Plakos of The Wellness Community.

Skechers has been donating a pair of shoes to each participant who completes an hour-long run, jog or walk on the treadmill.
