The criminals have more rights than the victims. First we cater to them in prison by giving themRead More more benefits and services than we give to our veterans. Now we are releasing early without serving their full sentence. The worse part is when these early release criminals commit a new minor crime, they aren't charged, sentenced and sent back to jail, they are given "flash incarceration" for 5-10 days in county jail. I have a suggestion for Jerry Brown, if the jails are too full how about taking away the comforts making it an actual bad place to be. Jail should be a bad enough place that the threat of going would deter criminals.

Well, I'm studying for Nursing and this subject is something that I'm not very familiar with. But IRead More like the article and agree that it's not a right decision letting prisoners be released earlier. In addition, having all that comfort in a jail doesn't prevent them from committing crimes again once they get out.

This article is very, very good..I am not for early release due to overcrowd, there has to beRead More another solution. Take them to a island and just leave them there. Having a murder in my own family, is horrible and the thought of any crimnal getting out early just for that reason is not good enough, Think of something esle California...

You can't improve the education system without making the tough choices like implementing theRead More Wisconsin reforms. Next you have to stop Common Core in its tracks. Common Core is just a way for the federal government to institute another phase of Agenda 21 by taking over the education system at all levels. The education of our kids must be done at the local level and not in D.C. or Sacramento. There has to be tenure reforms that makes it easier to terminate bad teachers who are tenured. At the same time we have to reward teachers who are doing an excellent job. We also need to recognize that not all students are created equally when it comes to grey cells. We have to stop trying to dumb down the bright kids and give them the opportunity they need to fly to new heights. Some kids are going to end up hamburger flippers while others will be rocket scientists or the next Steve Jobs or perhaps the next Herbert von Karajan. The answer is not to dump more money into this bottom less pit that gives us no results.

I just have to shake my head. You now have a completely democrat controlled state, who wanted moreRead More socialism, and now that you've got it? sheesh. Make up your minds. Oh!! and I'm sure that you know that socialism doesn't work forever, because sooner or later, you run out of other people's money. Maybe if we get less money, we'll get less social engineering. (see the post above). Sickening....boys going into girls bathrooms. Young girls taken to get an abortion without parents knowledge or consent. Oh perhaps soon you'll just have a big box of "Plan B" at the office counter. You guys broke it. When the masses figure that out, maybe finally we'll start electing thinking adults as our representatives again.

Stephanie: I don't recall asking for examples of licensees who made bad choices. I do recall askingRead More if "you have an objective basis for your concerns?" You responded by identifying some anecdotal (as opposed to statistical) evidence that some licensees made bad choices. Your evidence fails to support your position. Here's a brief article discussing the number of licenses that Florida has revoked because of gun related crimes: http://politics.heraldtribune.com/2012/07/25/florida-approaching-1-million-concealed-weapons-permits/ Regarding your questions about G. Zimmerman. (1) I've already pointed out mistakes ziimmerman made, including following Martin. So, no, I would not want him to be the neighborhood watch captain. (2) I can and do avoid places where there are increased risks of violence (ATMs at night, check-cashing stores, prostitutes, drug dealers). That being said, I cannot accurately predict when/where I will need a gun. People are robbed in grocery store parking lots as well as coffee store parking lots. So, I believe the desire to have a gun in those locations is not unreasonable. More importantly though, I don't think people who are licensed to carry guns should repeatedly take their gun on and off all day long. This needlessly increases the risk of a negligent discharge. (3) The forensic evidence strongly supports virtually every element of Zimmerman's account of the incident. The significant element that is unsupported is whether Martin saw and attempted to grab Zimmerman's gun. Given that Zimmerman was already sustaining serious bodily injuries, this element isn't really necessary to believe the propriety of acting in self-defense. As to the two lies you reference, the first related to Zimmerman's finances. It was his wife who made the representations to the court. Zimmerman sat there "like a potted plant" in the words of the court. This obviously reflects poorly on him, but likely will not be presented to the jury. The second lie relates to his passport. A second passport was issued to him after he reported the prior passport had been stolen. The court itself did not believe Zimmerman was lying about the second passport, but that there were more innocent explanations. You apparently believe I think Zimmerman is innocent. I am waiting to see all the evidence before I make up my mind.
Stephanie May 20, 2013 at 02:39 am
You asked for some licensees who made bad choices with their concealed weapons and I gave them toRead More you. Why don't you ever answer any of my questions? Knowing what you know now about George Zimmermans arrest record (before he killed Martin), would you want him in charge of your neighborhood watch? Does one need a gun to go to Starbucks? The grocery store? How can we believe anything Zimmerman says after he lied TO A JUDGE TWICE?

Mr. Finch, This responds to your statement in your letter that "the 1993 CUP and OilRead More Production Code requirements are more restrictive than the general noise requirements in the City’s Municipal Code." That statement suprised me, so I checked out our Municipal Code. It turns out that Section 8.24.040, subsection (C) of our Municipal code, titled "Specific Prohibited Noises" prohibits, from 10 pm to 8 am, any engine, motor or any other mechanical equiment from emitting any noise or sound from being audible at the property line of the property from which the sound is emanating. That means from 10 pm to 8 am, we are not supposed to hear any audible sounds coming from the City yard if we are standing on the sidewalk at the yard's property line. So are you telling City residents that if E&B oil drilling project starts, one can stand at the property line of the City yard between 10 pm and 8 am, and cannot hear any audible noise or sound? If not, are you saying that E&B will have to violate the Municipal Code, or will the City have to amend the Municipal Code to allow the drilling to proceed? I know you want to set the record straight, so I look forward to your response. Thank you. Keep Hermosa hermosa.

To: Michael Finch - Vice President of Health, Safety & Environment, I really have to laugh atRead More your title and the quality of work you do for your company. Being the Vice President of Health, Safety, & Environment for E&B you are probably the person who should be held accountable on E&B behalf for spilling 16,000 gallons of toxic fluid in California over the past 6 years according to the reports E&B has legally had to file with the "California Emergency Management Agency". That is almost 7 gallons of toxic fluid a day for the past 6 years! http://stophermosabeachoil.com/?p=1649 You have been doing a stand up job. Maybe a promotion to Executive Vice President is in order! There is nothing that I like more than having an 18 wheeler rolling down pier avenue along Valley every 30 minutes especially when school kids are getting out. That is something we Hermosa residents are used to daily right? It will be great when you are ripping up Valley road to 190th street to put a gas line in. That noise of construction is tolerable? Looking at the hack job on the report of someone drawing "squiggly" lines to represent noise pollution is a joke. Even they said it would be above normal. Keep up the great work, your doing a stand up job! HA!

Any time I see "single use bag" I know that the writer has an agenda to foist. Most peopleRead More will reuse these bags or put them in the recycling bin that all markets are required to have. One of these bags weighs 1/7th the weight of a TJ's paper bag and this affects transportation costs as well as recycling volume. Regarding civility and respect, Mr. Charles, I also noticed this comment from a previous post: FromRead More the article "Man Uses Gun in MB Bank Robbery", Mr. Charles commented: 11:32 am on Saturday, March 30, 2013 "Are you out of your mind or just a bloody, racist? How do you justify your hypocrisy, Mr Charles?
Arthur Christopher Schaper April 27, 2013 at 06:39 pm
Other high (or rather "low") lights from Mr. Charles: "The next time you choose toRead More mention my "hateful retorts", I suggest you know what the he!! you are talking about first and do some research, you pathetic, simpering wimp." Here is some research below: "And ease up on the med cliches--you bore the he!! out of me." and "What kind of a blathering moron are you? Your gun would stop the bombs HOW?" This one is hilarious, too! "nonoise, you sound incredibly bitter and ignorant. Maybe your insurance will cover a lobotomy." "Shapiro is a gullible little dope." This comment cannot be ignored for its racial vehemence and ignorance: "You cherrypick the comments of the vile, anti-equality Dr. Ben Carson" Dr. Ben Carson advocated for Health Saving Acconts for everyone -- very equality-minded, and nothing vile about it. Waxman voted against tax credits for Health Savings Accounts, by the way. Repeal Obama-WaxmanCare!

Jeffrey Sabatini April 24, 2013 at 07:22 pm
In the mid 80s & 90s it was "SEX SELLS". The late 90s into 2005 brought us funny adsRead More that centered around dumb stunts, usually ending up with some poor guy getting hit in the 'boys'. Between then and now, the "heart tug" or "real men cry" ads like the Budweiser "Clydesdale friends forever" ad. Which of course was the perfect follower to Bud's "Mascot dog trains horse Rocky style" and "Donkey gets a shot" ads. All ad hall of fame'rs in my humble opinion. Sadly, it looks like the ad world has taken two giant steps backwards with the bevy of male & female eye candy flashed over disclaimers of side effects such as : Nausea, vomiting, uncontrollable flatulence, sudden weight gain, sudden weight loss, skin rash, welts & boils, hair loss, blindness, heart arrhythmia, swollen glands, muscle atrophy, Turrets, short term memory loss and how the product should not be used by or in proximity to pregnant women or nursing mothers. However, I would like to say "feek'n about time" for all the "thank you and honor our military and first responder" theme ads. But if I could change ONE THING in regard to this discussion... It would be to finally apply "Truth In Advertising Laws" to political ads! What say you?
Jeffrey Sabatini April 24, 2013 at 06:37 pm
Advertising is an art in itself. The ad spoof movie Crazy People showed how important the right tagRead More line can be with "Metamucil, use it or you will die!". Or like the motto of my former firearms dealership... "If our guns can't kill it, it's immortal!". Good times, good times.

@Bob, I totally agree with you! If you buy near a school, don't bitch about the kids or the 15mphRead More speed limit. If you buy near a train track don't bitch about the noise of the train. If you buy near a bar... @Judy, you sound like the angry one. If you don't want to live near the bars, don't buy near the bars, it's as simple as that. No where is anyone saying that drunks on the road at anytime is a good thing, in fact, what Bob said is that it has been shown that DUI's have gone down. I don't know if this is true or not, but you have given no evidence that it isn't.
Judy Garland April 25, 2013 at 03:59 pm
wow, Bob, not sure just WHY you are so angry! Perhaps a "drinking problem"? YouRead More obviously don't have drunks putting things in your plants or peeing on your house! You probably live EAST of PCH, perhaps YOU are the one to move? And we do NOT need more drunks on the road after midnite either! With your suggestion, they can hit the poor people going to work early in the morning….perhaps "getting a LIFE" might be a GREAT idea instead of hanging out in bars til 4 a.m.!????
Bob Atkins April 25, 2013 at 02:48 pm
Wohoo! Its about time we grew up children! 4am closing is a GREAT idea. I don't see any reason whyRead More bars can't stay open 24/7. After decades of having an 11pm closing time for pubs, in Nov 2005, the Brits finally decided that it made more sense to allow pubs to remain open 24/7! Forcing an early closing time just makes people drink the same in shorter period of time and then forces those drunk patrons out onto the street at closing time. Since the Brits allowed 24/7 pubs, the number of drunk and disorderly and DUI issues have gone WAY down! Patrons can drink without the 'pressure' of knowing that they have to get their partying in by a certain time. If they pass out the pub pours them into a cab and sends them home. Better still, they can hang out at the pub since most also serve food and coffee which allows patrons to sober up before they leave. Yesterday, I saw a petitioner going around asking for signatures for a measure that would close the bars in Hermosa one hour EARLIER! What a selfish and dumbass idea. If people don't like living in the best beach town in CA then LEAVE! Stop moaning about the Hermosa nightlife! It is an important part of the character of Hermosa Beach and one of the main reasons my wife and I chose to buy a house here 13 years ago! If you don't like Hermosa's nightlife, go live in Manhattan Beach or better still the perfectly sanitized stepfordville of Palos Verdes. Don't ruin my town with your fascist attitudes!

Steve, really? Do you think inner city kids can afford to do that? Marineland gave lots of thoseRead More kids the closest thing to seeing these wonderful creatures and I'm sure inspired some of them to venture into zoology and related fields. There is abviously some balance that is necessary given that most animals become stressed in unnatural settings. However, there is also great value in teaching children about animals, protecting their habitats, environment etc. And marineland did that far better than a movie or tv show and far cheaper than Steve's perfect world scenario. I tend to side well on being as absolutely humane as possible. Some people think zoos and places like marineland should be outlawed and I get that too. But don't forget that marineland saved lots of sea creatures as well.

There is no better way, in my estimation, to see animals like dolphins, whales, seals, sea lions,Read More walruses, sea elephants, etc., than to go on a nature cruise in the ocean where these creatures live. I have never liked watching the shows where these animals perform because frankly, they are boring. Taking a whale watching trip off the California coast or rafting the Napali Coast in Hawaii allow you to see these creatures in their natural habitat and in a much better setting. I don't want to sound elitist, particularly since these other excursions tend to be expensive, but it's not so cheap these days to go to San Diego or elsewhere and pay for a day at Sea World, either.
M Charles Fogg May 6, 2013 at 03:04 am
(continued) Now to go after the depleted stores right under us, we are treated to something far, farRead More beyond any possibility of mitigation. An industrial plant, consuming huge amounts of water, burning fuel to make steam, venting carbon monoxide, recovering gas under variable pressure and poor quality oil from water return, then dealing with waste water – fracking “light” except (so far) for the poison injection. There are no possible mitigations from explosion or spills in this industrial process, never mind the absurdity of doing it in earthquake country. If the prior CUP conceded the city's police powers, think of what they have to do next. After a lying “hurry-up” EIR (paid for by E&B) says everything is mitigated 100%, realize that the Councilmen who invited in this abomination will again have to convince the community it's OK to concede the city’s police power and that E&B can do anything they want. The McPhearson project was absurd. Its CUP said the solution for explosion and fire was to evacuate. EVACUATE, let that soak in. What will another one say for really big explosions laced with carcinogens? How big will the contingency bond have to be? What is the dollar value of the implicit “taking” of the property values in the adjacent high-density residential zones? This isn’t funny any more.
M Charles Fogg May 6, 2013 at 03:03 am
This thread would be funny if it weren't so tragic. Oil drilling is illegal in Hermosa BeachRead More because in the prior attempt to just drill into the tidelands, the city chose to surrender its police powers to regulate the driller. The citizens had no choice but to make drilling illegal. The prior Conditional User Permit (CUP) actually says that the City "finds" money to be a greater consideration than the health and welfare of its residents. Every environmental point the citizens would require, the city's response to violations would be to "measure". Absent are statements about the city's right to prosecute such violations. Emissions are "limited" to 1%. Laughable. Of course this was all necessary since it is absolutely impossible to mitigate the environmental impact of drilling oil under thousands of bedroom windows, even if a lying EIR written for, and paid by, the driller says so. Anyone who thinks an oil project’s impact can be mitigated, go to any oilfield and smell and listen. Never mind the irony that the city then and now gets no revenue from the tidelands oil.
