Classes to Start at Community Garden

Now that the city has decided to allow a temporary garden to sprout in the community, class will be in session for residents interested in growing food.

Starting in October, Hermosa Beach residents interested in improving their gardening skills will be able to take a class right here in town at the in South Park.

The Hermosa Beach City Council in August agreed to allow a temporary garden to grow in the community, and now a series of four weekend classes will be offered at the garden site as part of the UC Cooperative Extension's "Grow L.A." garden initiative.

The initiative aims to help new gardeners learn to grow crops quickly and easily in either a container, backyard or raised plots at a community garden.

"Everyone who is interested in growing some of their own food can help their families eat better—and have fun doing it," said Yvonne Savio, manager of the UC Cooperative Extension's common ground garden program, in a statement. "Sharing your experiences and extra produce is a great way to connect with your neighbors."

UC Cooperative Extension volunteers will organize and lead the Hermosa Beach gardening classes as well as teach the basics of gardening.
