The Los Angeles County Fire Department is now accepting applications for new lifeguards to patrol county beaches.
The application filing period opened Aug. 9 and will continue through Sept. 20, according to the Los Angeles County Ocean Lifeguards website.
The required 1,000-meter swim exam will take place Oct. 13, and the top
100-120 finishers will continue to the interview portion of the
application. The starting wage for a lifeguard is $21.29 per hour, with an 11 percent
bonus for those who are also emergency medical technicians. Benefits
include paid vacation time, paid sick time, possible medical insurance, a
flexible work schedule and paid workouts, according to the website.

Once hired, lifeguards can either work full-time during the summer or a minimum of 20 recurrent shift.
