Hermosans Bring Home O, Christmas Tree

Hermosa families flock to either the Kiwanis Club's charitable Christmas tree lot or Debbie and Jeff's tree sales each holiday season.

Each holiday, Hermosans choose between two Christmas tree sales in town where they can purchase the family tree from amiable staff: either the 's charitable lot or Debbie and Jeff Perry's PCH business.

Whenever a family visits the Kiwanis Club lot in front of the Community Center on PCH, "we take pictures of them when they buy their tree—like 'here you are with your tree,'" Paul Amarillas of the Kiwanis Club told Patch. "We do it for everyone who buys a tree. They can use it for their Christmas card or whatever."

Just a few blocks north on PCH, husband-and-wife duo Debbie and Jeff have been operating a Christmas tree lot since 1981. They used to sell Christmas trees at another lot by the Hermosa Hotel, too.

Even though both tree lots are popular with locals, their features differ (see accompanying photos).

Debbie and Jeff offer custom flocking (which is the artificial snow sometimes featured on trees), applied in "any color," Debbie told Patch. The duo also sells silvertip trees, Scotch pine, and Grand firs.

"My father used to sell trees," Debbie said. "He retired in 2004 after selling trees for about 65 years… He used to cut the trees up in the forestry on Mount Shasta."

Debbie added that her family bought a farm in Oregon about 20 years ago where she and Jeff grow their own trees. "But we do have to buy some," she said.

The Kiwanis Club offers two sizes of live rosemary trees, and one size of live cedar trees along with its own cut trees. Having sold trees for 25 years, proceeds from each holiday venture benefit the local community.

Both the Kiwanis Club and Debbie and Jeff's tree lots sell Noble and Douglas firs, and offer delivery services and flame retardant.

With the selling of Christmas trees in Hermosa Beach, municipal code requires adequate cleaning of the tree lot areas following the winter holidays.
