Manhattan Avenue Mural to Debut in February

The display is second in the Hermosa Beach Murals Project's initiative to complete 10 local murals around town in 10 years.

A mural on the corner of Pier and Manhattan avenues that depicts early-1900s Hermosa Beach is nearing completion, the Hermosa Beach Murals Project announced Tuesday.

An unveiling ceremony has been set to take place Feb. 11 from 2:30 to 5 p.m at 200 Pier Ave.

Local artist Chris Coakley was selected to paint the mural, which depicts a young woman throwing a bucket of paint onto the wall. The paint then forms a picture of Hermosa Beach from many years ago.

The first mural in the project was unveiled in May on the north-facing wall of parking Lot C at 13th Court and Hermosa Avenue.

"Murals upgrade the city; we have a motto that speaks to the importance of the murals. It’s 'making a positive impact, one wall at a time.' " Chuck Sheldon, president of the Hermosa Beach Murals Project, told Patch during the unveiling in May.
