Jazz under the stars

Where and when: Redondo Union High School, 631 Vincent Park, Redondo Beach; Friday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Why go: Get the weekend started with a —the evening includes performances by the award-winning RUHS Jazz Band as well as the Dance Guard. Bring a blanket to sit on and partake in the bake sale, silent raffle and BBQ.

Book signing

Where and when: Neptunian Woman's Club, 920 Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach; Saturday, 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why go: Get a hardcover, first edition signed copy of Dreams of Joy, the latest book from author Lisa See. Event includes by See. Dial-a-Ride available.

Beach volleyball elite tryout

Where and when: Hermosa Beach Pier, 1 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach; Saturday and Sunday

Why go:  for a chance at the pipeline to the Olympic Games. Or, if you think you've got what it takes, show off your best spike.

Catch the wave

Where and when: Sangria Restaurant, 68 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach; Sunday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Why go: Head over to Sangria for  from Mira Costa High School Jazz Band. Hosted by the Foundation of Local Arts.
