'Bye Bye Birdie:' Local Youth Bring Elvis-Based Musical to Life

A whole lotta hootin' and hollerin' could be going on this weekend and next in Hermosa Beach as Conrad Birdie, who seems a lot like Elvis Presley, comes to life on stage at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse in "Bye Bye Birdie."

Staged by Belasco Theatre Company, a non-profit South Bay youth performing arts group, this version features youth performers who have rehearsed like crazy to put on a fun production audiences will love.

Jesse Givich, a 17-year-old from Manhattan Beach, plays Albert Peterson and Rose Darcy, a 13-year-old from Hermosa Beach plays his mother, Mrs. Peterson.

Birdie is set in the late 1950s as teenagers across the nation are going crazy for the handsome rock star, Conrad Birdie, who, to the dismay of his adoring fans, is about to be drafted into the army. His manager attempts to stage a farewell party for him, in which he is to kiss one lucky fan on the Ed Sullivan Show. Kim MacAfee, from Sweet Apple, Ohio, is the lucky girl chosen to be kissed. But conflict arises when her boyfriend, Hugo Peabody, gets jealous.

Bye Bye Birdie plays Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. through July 7 in the playhouse at 710 Pier Ave. Tickets cost $17 for adults and $15 for children under 12, seniors and groups of 10 or more.

Visit belasco.org or call (310) 379-4208 for tickets and information.
