"Five Elements" Photo Exhibit

Paul's Photo presents photographs by 14 members of the Palos Verdes Art Center’s Photographic and Digital Artists (PADA) Group in the exhibit “The Five Elements,” July 1 - July 30.

The five elements of earth, wind, fire, water and void have been long a part of human understanding of the natural world. They are the elements we experience with our senses. Although they have become less obvious in our age of technology, we still return to them in one way or another in our experience of the outdoors – in the wilderness or our own backyards -- watching how a river flows, enjoying the fading glow of a sunset, or viewing the aftermath of destruction by the elements. These five elements of nature continue to shape our world as much as the way we think about them both in a literal sense as well as in symbol.

In the exhibit, “The Five Elements” PADA members explore these venerable concepts using contemporary medium of photography. This collection of photographic images captures each photographer's interpretation of the literal, symbolic and, ultimately, mysterious essence of these elements from the solidity of earth, the fluidity of water, the ephemera of fire and air, and the absolute emptiness of void. Among the works are Mark Comon's eerie landscapes of sand and sky; Marguerite Hossler's humble, yet hopeful, warming votive fire; Jim Bardos' ethereal eagle made of clouds; Beverly Gates' ghostly succulent dancing in the wind, and Joe Orsillo's sepia seascapes in which the waves and clouds seem to be rushing toward the viewer.
