Hermosans to Walk Through the Roaring '20s

Hermosa Beach Murals Project to host second annual Walk in History event.

As the first mural in the Hermosa Beach Murals Project is underway, Hermosans can fundraise for the initiative at the second annual on April 16.

Participants will tour the city along a one-mile course, stopping at historical sites from the 1920s that feature influential architecture and where some celebrities lived or vacationed.

There will be prices for those who gather clues and learn the most along the walk (see accompanying entry form by clicking ‘view gallery’ under photos). Plus, a local youth choir and band will provide live entertainment.

Money raised from the event will support the Hermosa Beach Murals Project, a community group dedicated to completing 10 murals throughout the city in 10 years.

Los Angeles-based artist Art Mortimer was selected to paint the first mural in the project on a parking structure wall at the corner of 14th Court and Hermosa Avenue.

The City Council last year for the mural to be placed on Hermosa Avenue, just months after the project was founded in January and granted nonprofit status in April.

"The murals project does several things," Chuck Sheldon, president of the Mural Project, told Patch last year in April. "It beautifies the city with public art, provides a documentation of the history of the city, offers a point of discussion to help educate residents, and adds to the economy by creating an opportunity for tourism."

A dedication ceremony will be held when the first mural is complete, which is slated to be in May.
