Landmark Hermosa: 1920s Hermosa Beach Mural

If you guessed the first mural in the Hermosa Beach Murals Project for this morning's trivia, you were right.

As a new year approaches, the mural of 1920s Hermosa Beach that sits at 13th Court and Hermosa Avenue serves a new local landmark that joined the community this year.

The mural was as the first completed artistic piece in the initiative to create 10 murals in 10 years.

"Every day when I went to work, I could see this mural progressively grow and really capture the essence of Hermosa and the spirit we have in this community," said Hermosa Beach Mayor Peter Tucker, speaking at the unveiling ceremony.

The mural idea was proposed to the Hermosa Beach City Council as a public art project in 2010, and was approved unanimously.

The council then approved the for the first mural, and was selected to paint the mural.

Now the Murals Project group aims to create more artistic landmarks around town in coming years.

"Murals upgrade the city; we have a motto that speaks to the importance of the murals.  It’s ‘making a positive impact, one wall at a time,’ " Chuck Sheldon, president of the Hermosa Beach Murals Project, .
