Landmark Hermosa: Clark Stadium

If you guessed Clark Stadium for this morning's trivia you were right.

Hermosa Beach’s is where the community can "play ball"—but that hasn't always been the case.

In the park’s early days, according to the Hermosa Beach Historical Society, "there was a septic tank which pumped its residue through pipes to a sewer dumping ground, which apparently was the west end of the then-named Cypress Park."

A sanitation district was established in the mid-1930s, solving the problem, and in 1936 the field site's name changed from Cypress Park to Clark Stadium, in honor of Hermosa Beach's then-Mayor John Clark, according to the historical society.

The bottom left portion of the Hermosa Beach city seal, which was designed by John Hales in 1964, according to reports, shows a baseball bat and tennis racket, depicting the sports played in and around Clark Stadium.

Now the stadium is still used and recently saw renovations in March, which is when the Hermosa Beach Little Leaguers kicked off their summer season at the newly enhanced ball park. Check out these Patch photos from Opening Day:
