SoCal Lifeguards to Star in Docudrama

The Weather Channel's "Lifeguard!' premieres next week.

A new docudrama on The Weather Channel, set to debut next week, shares with the world the many challenges Southern California lifeguards face on a daily basis—from dangerously large waves to sand traps.

The reality TV series "Lifeguard!" premieres Feb. 23 at 9 p.m., according to The Weather Channel’s website, which describes the show as set along one of the most famous coastlines in the world, stretching from Malibu to San Diego.

While Hermosa Beach is not featured in upcoming episodes, nearby beaches are, such as Long Beach, where "danger unfolds" at a boat launch, and Huntington Beach, where lifeguards respond to "multiple reports of people missing in the water," according to the online episode guide.

"Content on all of The Weather Channel platforms focuses on weather and how it affects peoples' everyday lives," said Michael Dingley, senior vice president of content and development for The Weather Channel, in a press release. " ‘Lifeguard!' speaks directly to that mission, offering viewers an inside look at how lifeguards handle the dangerous conditions and situations they face on a daily basis, and the role weather plays in helping or hindering their efforts."

Here in Hermosa Beach, while the beach is city-owned, the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Service monitors the area, and the county's  sits next to the Hermosa Beach Pier.
