Youth Theatre Gets Footloose Starting Tonight

Puttin On Productions mounts the teen musical opening tonight at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.

Local teens are getting a chance to strut their stuff in a new production of the stage musical Footloose, produced by theatre company Puttin On Productions.

The show opens tonight for a five-show run over the weekend.

According to company executive director Julia Mirkovich, the cast is made up of 25 teens between the ages of 14 and 20 years old.

"You watch them, I can't believe they're teen agers," Mirkovich said about the cast.

She picked the show not only as a crowd-pleaser, but also because it was something the kids are familiar with.

"Most of the shows we pick, the kids don't know," Mirkovich said. "But we do a few shows that they're familiar with."

That being said, if it hadn't been for last year's re-make of the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon, the teens probably wouldn't have known the show.

"I bet you a year ago, these same kids would not have known the movie," Mirkovich said.

The production is the musical produced on Broadway in 1998.

Footloose opens at the Hermosa Beach Community Center Playhouse, 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach, tonight at 7:30 p.m. Shows are also at 7:30 p.m. on April 20 and 21 and 2:30 p.m. on April 21 and 22. Tickets cost $18 and are available by calling (310) 717-7573 or going to the Puttin On Productions website.
