Cut Something, Not Someone

In this blog post Barbra shares how cutting clothing you no longer wear in your closet can create this summer's trend and save you from an argument with someone you love.

I have been waiting years for the right opportunity to write the title to this post "Cut Something, Not Someone."

It always seemed a bit morbid to my method until I saw this headline last week on Patch: Domestic Quarrel Backs Up PCH Traffic

A violent argument between a husband and wife shut down northbound traffic. The wife was arrested on suspicion of battery.

Only in Hermosa Beach Patch can you get this kind of unknown paparazzi! I was in. I had to know more.

I found out this couple pulled their car over and began brawling on the very same block of PCH that I live on with my boyfriend Adam.

I immediately called out to Adam in the other room and said, “baby there's a couple that shut down traffic arguing right in front of our place."

The glee and perspective on our own domestic moments was quite comforting to both of us. This couple wasn't just arguing they were down right fighting or at least the wife was.

She kicked two passersby trying to break up the fight in front of their 5 year old, and then tried to drive off leaving her husband bleeding from his face and his arm.

You have all been there right? So mad you can't even see straight? Could be as simple as your printer won't print, your kids spilled spaghetti sauce all over your couch or your rescue puppy chewed up your favorite flip-flops.

These every day occurrences, sometimes you can handle and sometimes you can't.

As Zen as we are, all trying with mantras for the manifestation of our day, sometimes the #$%^ hits the fan anyway.

Instead of taking it out on someone you love, take it out on something you no longer love.

Grab your household scissors and destroy a ripped pair of tights for leggings or create this season’s beach dress from last season’s empire maxi.

You have no idea how cathartic it is to get your scissors out and cut something. You will find it's completely freeing and at the same time, meditative.

I have been a cutter for years now—get it from my mother, Bunny.

B was visiting from the Valley this past Friday wearing sweat pants cut into capris, a dress worn backwards cut into a top all proudly announced at Hermosa's Friday farmer's market.

No wonder her little apple wrote a book titled Closet Control (Sterling Press) on the joys of cutting amongst other clever not crafty topics.

Look who I got all this creative juice from?

What's the fastest, cheapest, greenest way to get new summer clothing? Cut last year's clothing into this year's styles.

Hemlines determine trends. If you are unsure of what you are sitting on in your closet, grab your favorite fashion mags and go into your closet. What you haven't worn? Give it a cut literally. (Maybe even blast George Michael's Freedom on your iPod)

No one can tell you what to do in your own closet. I promise that you can cut anything and any material. All you need is one bad day and a pair of scissors to jump-start your moving meditation from anger to joy.

Cut sleeves off of blazers, trousers into shorts, dresses into tops. Let go of the attachment of money spent, memories made and just do it—The life you save may be your own :)

Too afraid to try this on your OWN? Maybe you should watch this video on how the process works when I come into your closet.
