A Castaic man on a "pub crawl" was arrested Saturday around 6 p.m. and charged with assault, according to a Facebook post on the Hermosa Beach Police page.

Witnesses say the attack on the 49-year-old woman was "completely unprovoked," and started when 29-year-old Joel Jimenez slapped the victim on her rear end and then began to attack the woman, according to police.

The incident happened on Pacific Coast Highway as the woman and her 9-year-old niece waited to cross the highway to walk down Pier Avenue, according to police.

Jimenez, who was walking northbound on PCH, grabbed the victim's hair and began to strangle her. The girl began to scream and the woman yelled, "Help, call 9-1-1".

A construction worker nearby ran to the scene, drill in hand, to try to help.

Hermosa Beach Police officers were dispatched to a "strangulation in progress" and arrived within 60 seconds, according to police. Jimenez was taken to the ground and arrested without incident.

Jimenez told officers he was in Hermosa Beach to do a "pub crawl" with co-workers and was not sure how he ended up in handcuffs.

Call police at (310) 318-0360 if you witnessed the alleged assault or have any information.

"Jimenez told officers he was in Hermosa Beach to do a pub crawl" Just another byproduct of our booze culture, at least he didn't appear to be smoking.

People come to Hermosa to get drunk. This has a negative impact on our quality of life. We can do better.

It upsets me that incidents similar to this one are happening more often here in Hermosa Beach! Please, if you are local to this area, take some classes to learn how to protect yourself ! What if this happened in the middle of the night when no one was around? If she had taken some classes at South Bay Jiu Jitsu, she would have been able to free herself immediately! Unfortunately b/c of the UFC, many people have the wrong impression of what Jiu Jitsu was meant to be used for. Jiu Jitsu translated means "the GENTLE art" and is the BEST method of Self-Defense, especially for WOMEN! Jiu Jitsu actually allows the victim to defend them-self safely by putting the attacker into a position where he/she can no longer attack you. If you have been attacked or if you want to learn how to defend yourself from an attacker larger & stronger than yourself, please look into it. And yes, unfortunately people think of Hermosa as a Party Place and most of the attacks I hear about have to do with comings & goings related to the bars.

I cross that intersection frequently with my 85-pound Lab-Shepherd, and i'm pleased to say that the knuckleheads give us a wide berth. After this news, I may consider adding a weapon as a last line of defense.

p.s., Thank You, Hermosa City Council, for allowing this tiny city to become a magnet for pub-crawling jerks, as a result of the density and character of the bars here. It's unacceptable that we have to worry about this kind of attack from visitors who are drawn by Hermosa's Animal House reputation.
