The large ship off the Hermosa Beach coast Thursday, the Global Sentinel, is conducting a survey of an existing undersea telecommunications cable, according to a city spokesperson. The vessel was seen Thursday morning by Patch readers.
The Global Sentinel is heading to Portland, according to the latest report from marinetraffic.com.
The vessel is surveying the Unity cable which originates in Japan and lands in Hermosa Beach, according to city officials. Under the telecommunications company's Coastal Commission permit, surveys are required every 18 to 24 months.
