Cheap Gas for Memorial Day Travelers

Dropping for the 21st consecutive day, the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles area is now $4.083.

Memorial Day travelers will get welcome relief at the pump this weekend as gas prices dropped by nearly a dime over the past week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles area as of Friday morning was $4.083 per gallon—9 cents lower than last week and 15.2 cents lower than last month, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. The price is still $1.053 higher than it was last year.

"The Auto Club is expecting that 84 percent of Southern California travelers, or 2.2 million people, will drive to their holiday destinations this weekend, so the gas price drops are coming at a good time," said Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring.
