Hermosa Beach's Iconic Mermaid Bar to Be Reborn, But it's 'Not Your Grandfather's Mermaid'

The new restaurant is slated to open in December.

The Mermaid, a legendary local hangout in Hermosa Beach along The Strand, will be reopened in December by the owners of the Killer Shrimp restaurants in Marina del Rey and Santa Barbara, according to EaterLA

The new Mermaid will feature "low light, ubiquitous dark wood, and pool tables. Some dishes from Killer Shrimp will be on offer, in addition to new signature plates, however, repeat, no form of Killer Shrimp served here," EaterLA wrote.

EaterLA also added that management said this is "Not your Grandfather's Mermaid."

Situated with an envious ocean view at 11 Pier Avenue next to The Strand boardwalk where everything hip happens, the iconic establishment was owned for its first 57 years by Quentin “Boots” Thelen, who died in 2007, leaving the Mermaid and surrounding property to Albergate [his stepdaughter] and other family members. They then listed the entire L-shaped property for sale to pay estate taxes, according to a Beach Reporter article, which says the property has been for sale since 2007.

The property was sold to Strand Pier Holding Company over the summer, according to the Easy Reader News, and includes a number of other businesses, including the Poop Deck bar and Good Stuff restaurant on the Strand and the Cantina Real restaurant, Pier Surf Shop and Tiki Mon Creamery & Café on Pier Plaza. The property eventually is likely to be developed into a hotel and restaurants, the Easy Reader reported.
