Landmark Hermosa: North End

If you guessed the North End Bar and Grill for this morning's trivia, you were right.

The on Hermosa Avenue has been a neighborhood bar in Hermosa Beach for decades, but did you know locals have not only called it several different names, but it also used to spin around like a carousel?

The restaurant originally was called The Carousel and "rotated on a circular device not unlike a merry-go-around," according to the book Hermosa Beach, written by photojournalist Chris Miller and Jerry Roberts.

The venue then was named Esther's, and visitors could hear jazz in the back room, which was called the Chi Chi Club, according to the book.

In 1971, Pat McAuley and Mike Bringhurst turned the place into Critters, which closed when Bringhurst died in 1999, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

The local bar was then purchased by former employee Tom Amorosi, the report said, and reopened as North End.

Remnants of Critters, including its carved wooden sign, were later donated to the , according to the Easy Reader.

Now North End serves as a where locals watch the big game or simply enjoy the sun that shines through the round building's large windows.
