Landmark Hermosa: The Green Store

on the corner of 22nd Street and Hermosa Avenue has been a part of the Hermosa Beach community for decades, giving generation after generation their own memories of hanging out at the local shop.

According to the book Hermosa Beach, written by photojournalist Chris Miller and Jerry Roberts, a man named Welcome U. Almond opened a grocery store at 22nd Street and Hermosa Avenue in 1914.

That location became known as home to "the Green Store," as it was painted green. The local market has served the Hermosa community ever since, offering groceries, snacks, beer and wine, and even some exotic food items.

A Facebook group for adults who grew up on 22nd Street in the 1980s uses an image of the Green Store as its main photo on the page.

"After school I would go to the Green Store virtually every day on my way home," wrote Mira Costa High School alumnus Deon Chase on the Facebook page.

"Icees from the Green Store. That's all I ever needed as an HB kid," wrote Stacy Wadman. And Jonathan Lee wrote that he remembered "exchanging recycleable bottles for Icees."

Lisa Pace wrote that the Green Store "will always be a huge part of memories from early teens to late 30s... Best friend lived above for a few years!"

Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys reportedly had lived in the apartment above the store in the 1960s. Now singer-songwriter duo Jake Burman and John Ackerman have moved in, according to the Easy Reader.
