Landmark Hermosa: The Spot

Hermosa Beach may not be the oldest city in Los Angeles County, but it is home to the oldest vegetarian and natural health food restaurant in the area.

first opened its doors in 1977, introducing Southern California to a world of all-natural, organic and raw dishes. Angelinos and Hermosans were hooked on The Spot, including the restaurant's now owner of 30 years, Tonya Beaudet.

Beaudet frequented this natural food restaurant as a customer until 1980. When she stumbled upon a storefront sign that read, "here today, gone to Maui," Beaudet knew that this was her chance to buy and own The Spot.

Since the 1980s, The Spot has continued to bring in both vegetarians and carnivores through its red doors. Patrons even include Paul McCartney, who stops by the restaurant whenever he's in the city—"they have the pictures on the wall to prove it,"  published last year.

This veggie lovers' eatery has also been featured on the Travel Channel's Hamburger Paradise for its popular veggie burger, which did not come into inception until after Beaudet took over the Spot.

Though the concept of the veggie burger was developed in London in 1980, Beaudet perfected the craft in 1982 when she added the veggie burger to The Spot's menu.

"I didn't want to do pretend meat," Beaudet said in the Travel Channel segment. "We started this recipe that is made from all natural, organic ingredients: beans, rice, nuts and seeds."
