Landmark Hermosa: Yard Training Center

If you guessed the Yard Training Center for this morning's trivia, you were right.

What do some Hermosa residents, Olympic and professional athletes have in common? They each share memberships to the on Hermosa Avenue.

Jeremy "Troll" Subin, a fitness expert and professional trainer, founded the Yard in 1994, and it has become one of the most popular training centers in the county.

With 4,500 square feet of cutting-edge fitness machines, more than 10,000 pounds of free weights, and a boxing center, the Yard has appealed to some of the world's top athletes and Olympians, including Maria Sharapova and Kobe Bryant. The gym also offers group training for Hermosa youngsters.

The Yard earned a spot in Men’s Health Magazine as one of “America’s Best Gyms” in 2005, and here in the South Bay, it won the Easy Reader's Best Neighborhood Gym award last year.

“It truly is a neighborhood gym,” said Luiz DeFreitas, a Yard trainer since 1996, in an interview with the Easy Reader after receiving the award.

“You can park out front on the street, enjoy the surroundings of the beach and feel like family," he said. "Many of our professional athletes call us when they are away during the season just to see how things are.”

Editor's Note: While the Yard sits at 1106 Hermosa Ave., years ago, another Hermosa landmark was just a block away at 1006 Hermosa Ave., Vaupel's Liquor Store, according to a historical account from the Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library.
