Frosted Cupcakery Serves up Sweet Treats

Regular customers of the Frosted Cupcakery by the Hermosa Beach Pier range from out-of-town children to elderly locals, but what draws each customer to the shop is the sense of nostalgia brought about by cupcakes, according to assistant manager Marianne Garcia.

The decor of the shop reflects this nostalgia. Old-school soda pop bottles, such as the rare Mexican-made bottled Coca Cola, line its bright turquoise walls. In a way, the airy, well-lit shop is a modern-day, cupcake-style update to the 1950s ice creamery. 

The cupcakes themselves are anything but old-fashioned. Flavors such as "Katy Perry Strawberry Cream Cheese" (a promotion for Perry's recently released film Part of Me 3D) are hardly a 1950s' classic. 

For the more adventurous, there's the gluten-free mango pineapple coconut cream cheese cupcake, which is as much of a mouthful as its name and "tastes like you're on vacation," according to Garcia.

The flavor of the month, the s'mores cupcake, is coated with milk chocolate icing and a smattering of lightly toasted marshmallows and graham cracker crumbles. July is the month of beach bonfires, after all.

If you see your puppy dog salivating at the sight of your icing-coated fingers, you're in luck—the shop sells special cupcakes for dogs. And "cupcakes for dogs," are really just for dogs (although, technically, the main ingredient—chicken baby food—is for babies, not dogs).

The Hermosa Beach shop is the third location of the handcrafted-cupcake chain, which opened in Belmont Shore in 2005, and set up shop in Hollywood a few years later.

Cupcakes cost $2.95 each and $30 for a dozen.

The Frosted Cupcakery, located at 1227 Hermosa Ave., is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
