Panel Moves Forward With Food Truck Talk

The Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreation Commission has agreed to continue  by studying where in the community vendors can best serve residents and businesses.

Commissioners Laura Raymond and Jeff Maxwell volunteered in a meeting Tuesday night to serve on a subcommittee to research, review and develop possible food truck policy that will then be recommended to the City Council.

“There’s always room for new and innovative things for the city,” Maxwell told his fellow panel members. Commissioners Robert Rosenfeld and Don DeMaderios were absent at the meeting.

In the past, Hermosa Beach has allowed food trucks to operate at special events, such as the city’s annual . 

Commissioners now plan to study other operation options for vendors, such as allowing food trucks to serve residents at the weekly or in the PCH-Aviation area.

"Cities that use them [food trucks] wisely are able to attract people to certain locations," said Hermosa-based Barbie's Q food truck owner John Bowler at the commission meeting.

Hermosa Beach's municipal code concerning food trucks will need to be amended if the city decides to allow vendors to operate regularly or in new local areas.

Now a food truck must move every 10 minutes under city rules, unless it's operating at a special event, which was approved by the council (see accompanying business license code under photo.)

A public hearing will be held for community feedback before any decisions are made.

“So all the way from special events to special locations, this committee will start that process,” said City Manager Steve Burrell at the commission meeting.
