According to West Basin, each car washed in a driveway with a hose uses up to 100 gallons of drinking water and also creates polluted water runoff that eventually ends up in the ocean.

Conversely, the International Car Wash Association says that full-service car washes only use an average of 15 to 45 gallons of water per car.

"The Ocean-Safe Car Wash program is a tool for local car washes to market themselves as environmentally-responsible businesses," West Basin Board President Donald Dear said in a release. "It also allows residents to save money and be more water efficient, reducing runoff and making us less dependent on imported water."

The program is part of a greater effort by West Basin to increase water conservation by 3 billion gallons and reduce dependence on imported water by half by 2020.
