110 Freeway to Gain Toll Lanes

The carpool lanes on the Harbor Freeway will be converted into toll lanes during overnight closures.

Hermosa Beach commuters who travel the 110 Freeway to downtown Los Angeles daily will be able to pay tolls to use the carpool lanes next year.

Beginning Sunday, Metro will close the carpool lanes from 10 p.m. until about 6 a.m. daily so construction crews can convert them to toll lanes.

The construction on the toll lanes, which will run for 11 miles in each direction, should be complete in September 2012.

Travel times for Metro bus lines 450, 460 and 550 will be affected by the closure, according to reports.

Once the carpool conversion is done, solo drivers will be be able to pay a fee to use the carpool lanes. And, carpools, vanpools, motorcycles and privately operated buses still will be able to use the lanes for free.
