2010 Census: Hermosa Grows 5 Percent Over Decade

The new U.S. Census Bureau count also includes housing unit figures.

Hermosa Beach’s population rose 5.06 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The census listed Hermosa Beach as having a population of 18,566 in 2000—that number rose to 19,506 in 2010.

The census figures indicated that there are 10,162 housing units in Hermosa Beach, 9,550 of which are occupied and 612 of which are vacant. The 2000 census did not include housing figures.

How diverse is Hermosa? There are 1,632 residents who identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino of any race and 1,111 residents are Asian, according to the bureau.

A total of 229 residents are black or African-American, 46 are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 818 identified themselves as being of two or more races, the data showed.

About 87 percent of the city’s population, 16,928 residents identifies itself as white, the census showed. Figures were similar in 2000.

The Census Bureau released state population figures in December indicating that California’s population grew from 33.9 million residents in 2000 to 37.3 million in 2010.

This 10 percent growth rate makes California the 20th-fastest-growing state in the country, and it remains the most populous state, figures showed. (See accompanying map).
