Beach Cities Weekend: A Buzzing 'Beehive' and a New Farmers Market

Other Beach Cities activities this weekend include Yom Kippur services and a series of concerts.

Saint Rocke prepares to host a trio of concerts and the South Bay observes Yom Kippur. Here's the weekend lineup. 

Riviera Village rolls out the produce

The Riviera Village Farmers Market opens with a soft launch at 3 p.m. on Friday, running until 7 p.m. on Avenue I between Catalina Avenue and Camino de la Costa. According to market manager Susan Hillyer, 15 farmers will bring their produce to the inaugural market.

Girl power, '60s style

Beehive, a '60s girl group musical, has its gala press opening Saturday night at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. The Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities is mounting the music-filled look at groups such as the Shirelles, Brenda Lee and the Supremes. The opening is 8 p.m. Saturday night; Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $50 to $60. For additional info, visit the Civic Light Opera's website.

Japanese art show

Cannery Row Studios opens its show, Wa—South Bay and Japan, Connection Beyond Boundaries, Saturday in Redondo Beach. The show, which runs for one week, features Japanese and Japanese-American artists. Opening reception is 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday. Gallery hours are noon to 9 p.m. daily. It's located at 604 N. Concerts

Saint Rocke has a trio of concerts on the way: Rock band Gorgeous Got a Gun performs at 8 p.m. on Friday; 40 oz. to Freedom performs a tribute concert at 10 p.m. on Saturday, and Tom Sullivan takes the mic at 8 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, visit Saint Rocke's website.

Over at Brixton South Bay, Cecilio & Kapono will perform Friday night at 8 p.m. and Virgo Madness All-Star Jam is on tap for Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in Dive Brixton. The Motels also perform at 8 p.m. Saturday night. Tickets can be purchased here.

Yom Kippur Services

Area temples will be conducting Yom Kippur services in observance of the High Holy Day, which begins at sundown Friday. There will be services at 10 a.m. Saturday at Temple Shalom of the South Bay in Hermosa Beach and at 11 a.m. at Temple Menorah in Redondo Beach. Services will last throughout the day at Congregation Tikvat Jacob in Manhattan Beach. 

Mystery-filled Race

The Golden Heart Race takes off from American Martyrs Catholic School in Manhattan Beach on Sunday afternoon. Participants will be challenged with a series of obstacles, puzzles and clues. The urban race begins at 12:30 p.m. Tickets cost $75.
