'Beachapedia,' a Coastal Resource

The almost 2-year-old Surfrider Foundation project continues to archive coastal research, science.

Now that the world has entered a new year, more news and research surrounding ocean science has been collected in the Surfrider Foundation's Beachapedia.

The website—inspired by Wiki technology—has been a part of the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental group, for nearly two years.

The organization launched the online tool as an effort to catalog coastal science information gathered by Surfrider Foundation activists and environmental experts.

"Decades of coastal activism and environmental research have facilitated Surfrider Foundation's success at protecting oceans, beaches and waves," said Mark Rauscher, Surfrider Foundation’s assistant environmental director, in a statement following Beachapedia's launch. "Beachapedia strives to capture that knowledge."

Now Beachapedia houses research information related to the coastal environment—from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to rip currents, Hermosa Beach residents concerned about the local ocean can find a topic of interest on the website.
