City Seeks More CodeRED Participants

In an effort to spread the word about the emergency notification system, automated phone calls will be sent out to remind residents and business owners to sign up.

The city is dialing your number now so that during the next emergency or Great California Shake-Out drill you'll be sure to get an alerting phone call.

In a new effort to increase the impact of the CodeRED emergency notification system, beginning Aug. 25, residents and business owners who haven't signed up for the service will be receiving automated phone calls to remind them to do so.

CodeRED, which was launched in town three years ago, is a community-oriented communications network that provides residents with high-speed notification of important information such as citywide emergencies and road closures.

"We think it's very important for residents to sign up," said City Manager Steve Burrell. "It's a service the city provides, and the more people that sign up, the more will be notified. It takes just a few minutes to sign up and you're all set."

Burrell said that residents are ensured total privacy for their information in the system's database, so he encouraged people to include cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses when they sign up.

"Being able to quickly reach our community to provide important information, and in the event of an emergency is vital to the safety of our residents and visitors to Hermosa Beach," said Mayor Michael DiVirgilio in a press release.

The CodeRED system has helped the city notify residents and businesses about a missing child and a senior citizen with Alzheimer's who had wandered away, DiVirgilio said. Both were later found and returned to safety.
