Runaway Delivery Truck Barely Misses Apartment Building

A delivery driver saved this truck from crashing into an Hermosa Beach apartment building Tuesday after the truck's emergency brake apparently failed while parked on a hill.

The truck, which was parked facing downhill at the intersection of 7th Street and Pacific Coast Highway, ran into the yard of an apartment complex before the driver was able to jump back into the vehicle and stop it from hitting the building, police said.

According to police, the driver of the truck did everything right when he parked his vehicle on the hill and had his wheels turned into the curb.

"It doesn't sound like he did anything wrong," said Sgt. Robert Higgins. "It sounds like he saved it from hitting the apartment."

Had the driver not had his wheels turned, police said the truck could have run out if control down the hill and into traffic on Pacific Coast Highway.

"It looks like he did everything right," Higgins said. "Fortunately, he was able to hustle up and get in the truck and stop it before it hit the apartment."

After running into the yard, the truck became stuck on a wooden retaining wall and was later towed off the wall by two large tow trucks.

Higgins said the incident is still under investigation and said police will inspect the truck once it is moved to a safe spot.
