Free Hands-Only CPR Training Tuesday

By John Schreiber

Hermosa Beach Fire Department firefighters will teach free "hands-only" Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation lessons Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the fire station, 540 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach.

The simplified CPR technique, which firefighters often call a "lay person's CPR," emphasizes basic chest compressions at a rate of 100 per minute and drops the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation part of CPR.

Officials say that anyone can quickly master the technique. Tuesday's free lessons are expected to take less than 10 minutes working with a trained professional.

According to the American Heart Association, which is promoting the simplified hands-only technique, CPR can more than double a person's chances of survival and is simple enough for a child to learn.

Here's a video that shows hands-only CPR.
