Hermosa Garden Club Fundraiser Blooms

The annual plant sale and raffle benefits charities.

Innumerable flowering shrubs, perennials and exotic plants dotted the  Clark Building's lawn and outdoor tables early Saturday morning for the Hermosa Garden Club's annual fundraising sale.

"All these beautiful plants [brought me here]," said Loraine Namanny as she browsed the offerings. "I live here in the community so I'm here to help out."

Whether attracted by the mild, sunny weather, or dragged along by family members, the vibe of the event was pleasantly laid-back. Attendees ranged from the very young to the very old.

"I got involved in this club because it's a very friendly club," said Jackie Bhojak, adding that she used to belong to another garden club but it wasn't as welcoming.

"My wife did," said Hermosa resident Phil Horsfall when asked what made him come.

Some of the plants were grown by volunteers while others were purchased for donation.  In addition to the plants, organizers offered a bake sale and raffle featuring gift certificates, plants, wine and decorative items for the garden.

The event was organized by a volunteer staff that works year-round, said Diane Charbonneau, the club's president.

The sale generally raises $4,000 to $5,000 for charities every year, she said. All proceeds are donated to environmental and ecological organizations throughout the South Bay.
