High Surf Headed Our Way

Waves are expected to reach as high as 10 feet starting Sunday because of a storm near New Zealand, a National Weather Service advisory warns.

A high surf advisory will be in effect along Hermosa Beach and other parts of the Southern California coast, starting at 2 a.m.  Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles.

A strong storm system near New Zealand has produced a wave of large swells within the southern hemisphere of the Pacific Ocean, heading toward the South Bay, the weather advisory said. Those swells are expected to hit the local shoreline on the Fourth of July, and persist until Tuesday. The swells will be quick, likely reaching 10 feet at peak times and hitting the beach suddenly with dangerous rip currents.

"Waves may catch beachgoers off guard," the weather advisory warned. "And will be capable of sweeping people off their feet across the surf zone... rocks... as well as jetties and break walls."
