Keeping Pets Safe on the Fourth

July 4 celebrations are fun for people, but they may scare pets—here are tips to keep your pet safe.

While fireworks and barbecuing on July 4 is fun, they might disturb or cause dangers for Hermosa Beach pets, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles.

For example, the loud blasts of fireworks could scare cats or dogs—or curious pets could get too close to backyard barbecue pits, lighter fluids or other harmful objects.

  • Microchip dogs and cats and make sure they have current identification tags. Some pets can run away at the sound of fireworks.
  • Keep pets indoors during busy holidays (such as July 4) and away from loud noises (such as fireworks.)
  • If you’re hosting a party and need to keep your pet in another room, make sure it’s ventilated with a radio playing in the background to drown out other noises. Also, include your pet’s favorite toys and a bed for comfort.
  • Don’t tie up your dog outside to keep the pet from running away—loud noises could frighten your pooch, creating the urge to run even more.
  • Remind the kids not to scare pets with firecrackers or sparklers.
