Letter to the Editor: Grand View Fifth Graders Rock!

I was happy to read that the Grand View 5th graders came up with a well-thought-out, clever plan to replenish the sand dunes in Manhattan Beach. To have the dune users bring up sand every time they trudge up the hill is brilliant: not only does this save money and improve the air quality of the city, but it also increases the caloric burn for these sand dune exercisers! It is obvious that this new generation is focused on saving our planet one small city at a time with their outside-of-the-box mindset, their pride in our community and their concern for our future earth.

My only wish is that they were of voting age. Soon Hermosa Beach will have to choose between taking the easy way out or by also thinking outside the box. I cannot think of a single benefit to permitting oil drilling in our small community (besides greed for money). I have lived in Huntington Beach and Long Beach where both cities were mired with the pitfalls of oil drilling. In both cities I saw the after effects of drilling for oil--the smells and sights were deterrents for me to ever buy property and live side by side with the derricks. Now I am fortunate enough to live in Hermosa Beach. I love our ocean, I love the soft sand of our beach. I love our weather. But most of all I LOVE our community. We do not need to rely on oil drilling for the financial future of our community. Let’s emulate the vision of the Grand View 5th graders and think outside the box. What do we want Hermosa Beach to look like in 5 years? In 10 years? In 35 years (the life of the drilling project)? Let’s not disappoint the next generation. KEEP HERMOSA HERMOSA!
