Hermosa Beach resident and former Mira Costa High School student athlete Derek Largent was named to the Mountain West Football 2013 All-Conference Team by Athlon Sports and the Preseason All-Mountain West Defense 3rd team on Phil Steele's College Football Preview listed online in May.
Largent, a 6'4", 235-pound transfer from El Camino College, is a junior linebacker for the San Diego State Aztecs. In his first on-field season last year, his statistics included 61 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, three pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions and a forced fumble, according to an Aztec website.
Largent was received "scholar athlete recognition" along with 63 student-athletes from the greater Los Angeles area in 2011 as a high school senior. The honor is awarded for football performance, academic achievement and school leadership. He also played baseball at Mira Costa.
Steele, a football sportswriter and analyst, publishes preview books on college football and the NFL. The college publication features 352 pages with content on 126 Football Bowl Subdivision teams.
