Navy Week Continues In SoCal

Navy personnel are visiting the area as part of L.A. Navy Week, offering free ship tours and stopping by different towns—have you seen Navy crew in Hermosa Beach?

Patriotism and history are ever-present in Southern California this week as Los Angeles Navy Week is underway.

The event, which kicked off Monday, continues to Sunday and allows locals to meet with U.S. Navy crew as well as tour visiting ships.

"If you see Navy personnel in our community this weekend, please thank them for their service," said Hermosa Beach City Councilman Peter Tucker in a council meeting Tuesday night.

Throughout the week sailors explored the area—volunteering in communities and making appearances in Hollywood—while the public enjoyed free ship tours at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro.

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, cruiser USS Princeton, and minesweeper USS Champion will be open to tour for free Saturday, when the destroyer USS Chafee is scheduled to depart.

The Princeton and Champion are scheduled to depart Sunday. But the Lincoln still will be open to tour and scheduled to stick around until Monday (see accompanying ship schedule under photo.)

Photographs are allowed during tours, but to board the ships, a government-issued I.D. is required and children must be at least 8 years old.

Anyone planning on touring a ship is advised to wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to climb ladders. Free parking will be provided near the Port, and a Red Car trolley that runs along the waterfront will be free.

"The Port is in the midst of its busiest summer ever with respect to community activities," said Harbor Commission Vice President Dave Arian in a statement Thursday. "As a long time resident, I want everyone to enjoy these waterfront activities."

Los Angeles Navy Week is one of 21 Navy Weeks scheduled across the country this year.
