No Spirits at Sunset Concerts Urged

The City Council is likely to adopt the Parks and Recreation Commission's recommendation to not allow open alcohol on the beach during the series.

Hermosa Beach's Parks and Recreation Commission has decided not to move toward legalizing open alcohol on the beach for this year's Sunset Concerts. Commissioners said that they are focusing on educating the public about this ban.

"Legalizing alcohol opens a can of worms that's unnecessary," said commissioner Bill Sigler at a meeting Tuesday.

The City Council will likely adopt the recommendation of the parks commission to keep open alcohol illegal during the beach concerts, as well as to make a public relations push to remind the public of the law.

City Manager Steve Burrell said that the best way to educate the public was to get the information out through the local media.

The dates of this year's concerts are Aug. 22 and 29 and Sept. 12 and 26. The Sunset Concerts have been drawing families to the south side of the Hermosa pier on late summer Sunday afternoons for about 15 years.  Commissioners described the beach scene during the concerts as families picnicking while listening to the music.
