High surf along the Hermosa Beach coast is expected this week, according to an advisory from the National Weather Service that is in effect until noon Wednesday.

Big waves already seen in the area are predicted to subside Wednesday morning, but could return again through Saturday.

Surf is expected to reach as high as 9 feet in some local areas, according to the National Weather Service.

The waves rolling through the area are the first of their size in the new year.

"A long period swell over the coastal waters will continue to bring high surf to the central coast and to the west-facing beaches of Los Angeles," the advisory said.
