Update: Redondo's King Harbor Fish Cleanup Finished

City officials, workers and volunteers work long hours to remove dead sardines from the Marina—now Mother Nature takes over.

Updated: The cost of removing the truckloads of sardines from King Harbor Marina is estimated to be at least $300,000, Redondo Beach City Manager Bill Workman told the City Council in a meeting Tuesday night.

The final bill will easily exceed the original estimate of $100,000 because water surges as a result of the tsunami from Japan , city officials said, and the number of fish dead in the harbor was initially underestimated.

The cleanup of the King Harbor Marina next door in Redondo Beach is complete, the city announced on its website Monday.

The Redondo Beach City Council is expected to discuss the issue at its Tuesday meeting.

The panel will vote on a proclamation declaring that the cleanup ended what was a local emergency (see accompanying document under photos).

A large school of sardines died of oxygen depletion in the marina early last week, prompting the cleanup effort.

Redondo Beach Public Works employees continued to scoop up dead sardines Monday from beneath the surface of the water in the marina, which volunteers helped with last week.

“It’s part of my community so I try to help as much as I can," said Kim Lanie, a member of the  during a cleanup Thursday.

Volunteer Phil Evans has a boat docked in the harbor and told Patch last week that the crabs and birds finished off what was left of the dead sardines.

“I certainly appreciate all the good will and everybody getting involved. It’s wonderful to see the spirit of the community, but nature will take care of it," he said. "It always does."
