'Shark Week' Comes Alive

At least two great white sharks are spotted in Southern California waters—just in time for Discovery Channel's "Shark Week."

With Shark Week airing on the Discovery Channel until Friday, it seems the daily programming has come alive here in Southern California.

The sighting of a great white shark on the Dana Pride south of Hermosa Beach in Orange County last month has been followed by more sightings.

Passengers on board the Dana Pride out of Dana Wharf Whale Watch got quite a surprise July 26 as they not only saw a blue whale mother and calf, but also a great white shark.

Then a 12-16 foot white shark was seen by the Dana Wharf three-quarter-day boat off San Onofre State Beach on Thursday.

Workers on nearby offshore oil rigs reported that two weeks ago, a 15- to 18-foot white shark circled the platform for two days off and on looking for sea lions.

Sharks have been on many locals' minds this week as the Discovery Channel's popular weeklong series of shark-centric shows, which kicked off Sunday, airs daily at 9 p.m.

The annual series showcases everything from clips of sharks jumping and scientific research to special reports on shark attacks and even the top 10 most "weird"-looking sharks. More than 11 million viewers tuned into Shark Week's debut Sunday, according to the Discovery Channel.

Sharks have been an ongoing topic in Hermosa Beach Patch's  column—here's a roundup of some of the pieces:
